About the Featured Cover MusicianGillian HowellTwo project glimpses: Buckets and Bamboo - community music in rural Timor-Leste I was an artist in residence in the isolated community of Lospalos in Timor-Leste (East Timor), for four months between 2010 and 2011. Working alongside fellow musician Tony Hicks, local children and adults helped us explore ways of making music and instruments using locally available resources. As a group we learned to make kakalos (tradition bamboo log drums) and made a set of ten for use by the community in daily community jams, big and small.Stopwatch - collaborative composing with teenagers and musicians from the Australian Art Orchestra Stopwatch was inspired by Black Satin by Miles Davis. The young musicians divided into groups, invented sounds and grooves and created a stopwatch score for their music (determining time-lengths for their sections of music within given parameters). We then combined the groups and scores to create the final work. These images are from Day 1 of the 2-day project.
