What is a musician? Or rather, what do musicians do? When I first graduated with a BMus, I anticipated working with an orchestra for the rest of my professional life. But over the years, the creative contexts I've worked in have fostered the development of a more versatile, flexible musicianship. I am in turn a performer, collaborator, facilitator and creator of new work. While some of this work is with my peers and other professionals, much of it is with communities and in sites for learning - with young people, older people, first-time musicians, experienced players, and people whose culture and life experiences may be vastly different to my own. What changes in the work when the contexts or the collaborators change? We may need to establish a common vocabulary for our work, but the principles of collaboration, connection to others, ensemble and expression, remain the same. The open-ended, responsive nature of my role fires my imagination and hones my musicianship and musical communication. It connects me to my own music and the reasons that I play. My projects take place on behalf of arts organizations such as symphony orchestras and arts education providers, or as artist residencies. Sometimes the music is a vehicle for empowerment and social change; other times, projects take place for the sheer joy of creating and playing music together. In my work as a musician I'm a performer, composer, arranger, director, conductor, educator, learner, researcher, mentor, friend, and fellow collaborator.
